Manage your energy, not your time

Jan 20, 2022
9:00 am
PT
1h

The research is clear that individual wellbeing, work performance and organizational outcomes suffer in the long term unless employees develop the ability to balance the demands of the modern work world through better management of their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy. This rich, interactive and inspiring training helps employees understand that self-care is not a luxury, but rather an absolute necessity for showing up as the best versions of themselves at work and at home. It offers new insights that help participants recontextualize their own wellbeing as an essential business imperative and provides realistic strategies for enhancing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy so they can contribute more fully and sustainably to their professional and personal lives.

During this workshop, we will:

  1. Understand the connection between personal self-care, work performance and organizational outcomes
  2. Learn and practice strategies to increase self-awareness and manage and expand energy capacity in all four energy dimensions (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual)
  3. Understand the benefit of managing energy instead of time
  4. Gain clarity on individual purpose and align with behaviors that support people and things that matter most
  5. Understand how to support others in their own energy management journey

After the workshop, you will have learned:

  • How to manage and expand your own energy capacity in 4 dimensions
  • How to support others in their own energy management journey

Beyond DEI basics: uncovering social identities to foster inclusive and safe environments

Feb 4, 2022
10:00 am
PT
1h30

In this facilitated DEI workshop, you will uncover specific dimensions of diversity that may have been overlooked in your DEI work to date that have an impact on decision making, trust-building, and forming psychologically safe environments. In doing so, you will gain an awareness of your own social identity as well as organizational group social identities that shape inclusive organizational culture.

Why Start with Social Identity a Foundational Component to DEI Initiatives?

Building awareness around our individual and group social identities help determine ways in which we can form psychologically safe spaces for people to feel included and valued beyond the surface level acknowledgments of bias and inequity in the workplace, and reveal exactly how and where we might let our bias seep into our organizations.

Whether we’re seeking to build more inclusive spaces or break down barriers that prevent members of marginalized groups from professional advancement, we have to first examine the ways we show up and see the world around us and how that lens influences our behavior and our thinking. Social identities aren’t just limited to individuals; as members of workgroups, leadership teams, or departments, our collective lens also plays a role in how we treat people and who we deem as members of the in-group versus the out-group.

During this workshop, we will:

  • Increase awareness of own social identity and how individual identities impact decision making
  • Identify Team Social Identities and implications for in-groups/out-groups
  • Introduce Psychological Safety as a way to form more inclusive environments

After the workshop, you will:

  • Identify one focus area within their organization to apply their learnings
  • Design your own Social Identity Map (which each participant would create during one of the activities in the session)
  • Define the characteristics of Psychological Safety for your organization

Understanding social identities and intersectionality

Feb 17, 2022
10:00 am
PT
1h30

In this facilitated DEI workshop, you will have an opportunity to uncover specific dimensions of diversity that may have been overlooked in your DEI work to date that have an impact on decision making, trust building, and how you might navigate different environments.  Additionally, you will explore the intersection of multiple social identities that add to the complexity to how we understand workplace experiences.

Why Social Identity AND Intersectionality?

Building awareness around our social identities help determine pin-pointed ways we can form more psychologically safe spaces for people to feel included and valued that extend beyond the surface level acknowledgements of bias and inequity in the workplace to reveal exactly how and where we might let our bias seep into our organizations.

We all have multiple social identities that shape how we navigate our environments, which is why we will also spend time exploring the topic of intersectionality. Intersectionality, a term coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, is a framework for understanding different people’s varying experiences in the world. Intersectionality is not about adding one aspect of identity to another. It is about how people with overlapping identities experience systems of power.

It is important to consider intersectionality in the workplace because our various identities impact our daily lives, affecting how we perceive the world and how the world perceives us. When we look at how our identities intersect, we see the unique lived experiences—of ourselves and others—through the lens of privilege, oppression, power, and marginalization. Who has power? Who gets the benefit of the doubt? Who doesn’t? Who is automatically included in groups? Who isn’t? How do you “show up” to other people? What do you do to control how others perceive you? What parts of your identity help you fit in? What parts of your identity make you stand out? The answers to all these questions are rooted in intersectionality.

During this workshop, we will:

  • Increase awareness of own social identity and how individual identities impact decision making
  • Identify ways to adopt an intersectional approach in the workplace

After the workshop, you will:

  • Identify one focus area within their organization to apply their learnings
  • Design your own Social Identity Map (which each participant would create during one of the activities in the session)

Mastering mental focus: training for today’s attention economy

Stressors, smart phones, to do lists, interruptions and distractions tug at our mental and emotional energy all day long, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and “crazy busy” but still without the sense that we’ve attended to what’s most important. If we’re not able to sift through the stimuli, create clarity and stay present, we end up at the mercy of others’ agendas, our environment and our own frazzled inner state. In today’s attention economy, the ability to harness and direct our own mental energy is our most important resource. This training is designed to help you reclaim their mental energy and time so you can bring more presence and focus to the people and things that matter most.

Navigating unconscious bias

In this facilitated DEI workshop on Unconscious Bias, you will have an opportunity to build awareness around your own biases in addition to addressing two fundamental questions about the topic – (1) What is Bias and (2) Why does it matter?

Bias is our natural tendency to favor one thing over another. Building awareness around our own biases can help us to understand how biases (unconscious or conscious) influence our opinions toward or against people, places, things, and ideas. In doing so, we build capacities to examine our own blind spots and how bias can get in the way of our own personal goals and intentions.

Finally, the workshop will conclude by addressing the topic of privilege and how checking our own privilege at the door is a prerequisite to recognizing our blind spots and working past our biases in thoughtful ways.

As part of this workshop experience, participants will also have an opportunity to take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) (free) to examine their different biases in relation to over a dozen different forms of bias involving race, skin tone, weight, age, and disability. The assessment is completely anonymous and is administered by Harvard University.

Why End with the Topic of Privilege When Discussing Unconscious Bias?

Conversations about privilege often make people uncomfortable. In fact, conversations about privilege can make those who have some feel morally responsible for inequalities in the world, or seem to call into question their accomplishments in life, attributing them to unchosen identities instead of hard work. However, learning to see the privilege you have is an essential step in building relationships across difference and pushing past our biases about others [1].

In this way, learning about our biases need to go hand in hand with first acknowledging our privilege and then examining ways to leverage privilege to elevate marginalized voices.

During this workshop, we will:

  • Increase awareness of your own biases and how your biases impact decision making and opinions
  • Recognize your own privilege and leveraging this knowledge to build empathy and understanding of people whose lives are different from your own

After the workshop, you will:

  • Identify one focus area within your organization to apply your learnings
  • Take the Implicit Association Test to examine your own biases
  • Define the key terms such as (unconscious) bias, stereotypes, and privilege

Why DEI matters

In this facilitated workshop on foundational Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), you will have an opportunity to align on common definitions of key DEI terms and uncover specific dimensions of diversity that undergird the complexities of such topics.

The question, “why DEI matters”, will be a central theme of this session by addressing the business and socio-cultural impact of inequitable processes/structures/policies while also recommending small, concrete steps necessary to combat bias and leverage diversity to stay competitive and create a sense belonging for your team.

Why start with 'Why DEI matters'?

For many to consider the DEI topics or challenges that exist in our communities, workplaces, societies, or even social circles can feel overwhelming, spark anxiety, and trigger avoidance of such topics in conversation.

However, addressing the importance of DEI and the challenges facing people of color and other marginalized groups does not require we solve all the problems of injustice or inequity at once. Although, as a first step we do need to be intentional and accountable in the ways we act and treat others.

Using the question “Why DEI Matters” as a central theme of this workshop allows us to start the conversation around DEI at the 10,000 ft. level, but then also allowing us to transition to explore the question: why DEI matters to me/my organization/my team/my stakeholders?

During this workshop, we will:

  • Align on Key DEI terms
  • Increase awareness of different dimensions of diversity that exist
  • Reframe a DEI strategy to emphasize concrete actions that promote greater equity and inclusion within your organization

After the workshop, you will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the different dimensions of diversity.
  • Be introduced to a new framework to approach DEI that acknowledges organizational structures and behaviors
  • Gain knowledge of practical actions to build more inclusive business environments.

Understanding (and adapting) your working style through DISC

Description

DISC is a model of human behavior that helps you understand how you do what you do. It's a language to use (either independently or within a team) to talk about how we work — what motivates us, what irks us, and how we can communicate, manage, sell, and generally work more effectively with other people. It contributes to better self awareness, promotes adaptability, and builds empathy around our differences.

Note: this workshop requires every participant to take the DISC assessment in advance of the session. This is ~10 minutes of pre-work, and costs $50 per participant.

During this workshop, we will:

  • Learn and explore the language of DISC
  • Discuss DISC case studies to better understand and interpret other people’s style
  • Use the DISC vocabulary to practice navigating conflict at work and tailoring communication to people with different styles
  • Explore DISC as a way to understand team and group dynamics

After the workshop, you will have learned:

  • Your own DISC profile: every participant will walk away with a 20+ page individualized report with resources and tools to understand their own style and how to work most effectively with others
  • Note: if teams are going through this workshop together, you’ll also receive a team report
  • A sense of how to “read” DISC and use the language to work more effectively with others, particularly those who are different than you

Description

If you manage people, you may have asked yourself "Should I be the kind of manager who delegates? Is clear and directive? Coaches my team? Is supportive, but hands-off?" The short answer is: yes. Great leaders adapt their style based on the situation at hand, and Situational Leadership is a framework that helps you do it.  This workshop is geared toward People Managers of every level (it’s gotten rave reviews from C-Suite teams and first-time managers alike), and will be highly interactive, so come prepared to discuss.

During this  workshop, we will:

  • Learn the Situational Leadership framework — a perspective on when to direct, coach, support, or delegate based on the context
  • Explore real world situations that warrant different styles of leadership
  • Reflect on where you as a manager are particularly strong and where you have room to improve
  • Give and receive peer coaching around how to be a more effective manager
  • Make commitments that put Situational Leadership into practice
